About Us

The Fringe Foundation was conceived in 2013 by two Vanderbilt English PhD students (now doctorates). We were inspired by the organizing successes of Nashville’s Workers’ Dignity, which fights wage theft and systemic worker abuse through the collective action of low-wage workers and their allies. Workers' Dignity is entirely worker-led. Their struggles and their victories showed us how people can fight for their own rights—and make lasting change—by bringing together a community and its grant-giving allies.

The organization was founded in 2014 with the help of five family members new to social justice work. The foundation is currently managed on a strictly volunteer basis by seven family members from Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, and New York.

We continue to be inspired by Workers’ Dignity and by the Hill-Snowdon Foundation. We thank both groups for their guidance as we continue to develop our own identity.
